my 13 yr old has decided to stop playing soccer she has been playing since she was 3….?

…she said her passion is gone.
her coaches talked to her and she felt she let her team down so she decided to go back. Now that the training and soccer will start in the fall she does not want to do it. She feels she said yes to them because she did not want to let them down.she tried out again in June and we registered her. Fees were paid. She said her passion is just not there. And that she went back because she felt she let her team down. Her coaches told her at the time how she was a leader and she has such great qualities. I just don’t want them to think she not a sincere person. And I don’t want her to leave for the wrong reasons. She is a wonderful person. Now how do we handle this……Also she is a great soccer player…..HELP

It’s about fulfilling her commitment. Regrettably, she said “Yes” for the wrong reasons. But she has committed now, and should fulfill her obligation. There are a couple of big lessons in this that she can learn from:

1. Think things through before you give an answer.
2. Don’t let others pressure you into making decisions.
3. Once you’ve given your word, you have a responsibility to keep it.

Will it be tough? I’m thinking not so bad. After all, she’s played for ten years; one more year won’t kill her. Will she REALLY think before she joins the next team/club/function? Yes – and that’s a VERY good thing. That’s exactly what you want her to learn before she goes off to college and somebody suggests that doing something is a really good idea, or will be a lot of fun. Stop to consider.

If there is anything to talk over with her, it might be that next time somebody pressures her to do something, there is nothing wrong with saying, “I’d like some time to think that over, and I’ll get back to you.” How many times do we all wish we’d said that, before committing to something we later regret having said “yes” to?

Congratulate your daughter on her maturity in honoring her commitment. Cheer her on at all the games. Value the contribution she is making to the team – not because of her love for the sport, but in spite of her hesitancy to be playing at all. Some of the best things we do, we do out of obligation. This may be one of them.
